A sailing instructor describes the frustrations and satisfactions of teaching beginning sailors in New York Harbor. The students were enthusiastic and acquired skill and confidence while learning the discipline.

Sailing drills that can be used to teach sailing basics are presented. The drills include start-and-stop, luff-and-go and feathering to teach trimming the sails, sailing a course and sailing by the wind.
