The 10th Yachting Key West Race Week, held from Jan. 19-24, 1997, was participated in by 263 boats which were divided into 19 classes and 3 divisions. Windquest, a one-design participant, won the Yachting Trophy for the best overall performance in the most competitive class.

The intense competition at the 1993 race week underscored the need for separate divisions for specialized racing yachts and cruising yachts. The International Marine Commission rules defining cruisers and racers are expected by 1994.
