Power, policy, and political priorities: Elite sport development in Canada and the United Kingdom

Article Abstract:

Government and quasigovernmental agencies' use of 'planning dictates' in relationships with national sporting organizations (NSOs) in Canada and national governing bodies (NGBs) of sport in the United Kingdom are analyzed. The focus is on semistructured, in-depth interviews with key personnel in three Canadian NSOs and three UK NGBs in swimming, athletics, and sailing; senior officials at Sports Canada and UK Sport; and sport policy analysts and academics.

Pathologizing Billy: enabling and constraining the body of the condemned

Article Abstract:

This article presents a case study that describes the experiences of a white physical education teacher working with a native Canadian student with behavioral and emotional disorders. Observations of the student's participation in gym class provide insight into cross-cultural education and the effects of physical education on students with special needs.
