Predicting pain response in athletes: development and assessment of the Sports Inventory for Pain

Article Abstract:

An athlete's response to pain was evaluated using a newly-developed psychometric scale. The Sports Inventory for Pain (SIP) was tested for reliability in predicting an athlete's attitudes toward injury-related pain. Injured high school and college athletes were surveyed using the psychometric instrument. Results indicated that the SIP is a reliable instrument for assessing an athlete's pain-coping mechanisms and its subsequent effect in performance. It may also aid in developing strategies for the rehabilitation of an injured athlete.

Two studies are evaluated to examine select aspects of construct validity of scores derived from the Psychological Need Satisfaction in Exercise (PNSE) measurement model. It is suggested that the PNSE displays a number of psychometric characteristics that render the instrument useful for examining psychological need satisfaction in exercise contexts.
