The acceptable face of direct mail

Article Abstract:

Traditional restrictions on advertising by professionals in the United Kingdom have been relaxed, and more accountants are turning to direct mail to attract business. The Advertising Standards Authority is an independent agency which interprets and adjudicates the Code of Advertising Practice (CAP), which is the self-regulatory code of the UK advertising industry. Direct mail advertising is subject to essentially the same rules as other advertising mediums. The essence of the CAP is that advertising must be 'legal, decent, honest, and truthful'. Professionals planning to advertise their services should check mailing lists carefully, and be aware that the public expects higher standards of conduct from accountants than from other businesses. The value added tax (VAT) of a product or service should always be included in the advertised price.
