The evolution of light-air cruising sails is brought about in large part by advances in technology and the needs and wants of the racing world. The modern asymmetric shaping of sails has allowed sailmakers to increase the optimal wide-angle range of these sails, which greatly increases their value to cruising sailors. A list of companies with lofts across the American continent is presented.

The Santa Cruz Yachts have introduced its new Santa Cruz 53C which is essentially a Santa Cruz 52 hull with some slight modifications and a wide range of cruising options that were available on the 52. The new sailboat priced at $845,000 features a Yanmar 75-hp. turbo engine, sail area of 1,327 square feet and 23,500 lb of displacement.
