Shafts and bearings

Article Abstract:

Breakage and corrosion are the most common causes of shaft failure. Breakage usually occurs when propellers hit something. It also occurs when keyway damage sets in. Corrosion, meanwhile, usually begins with the bearings. It can also be caused by oxygen-starved stagnant water.

On the level: stabilizers help smooth the ride

Boats can achieve a smoother and safer ride through the use of a stabilizer. The most familiar is the active-fin stabilizer which is usually attached to the main propulsion engine for power. Electrically driven units are also available.
