Over the last few decades, ammo makers seeking to improve on the standard shuttlecock shape of the slug have come up with numerous designs from long and waspwaisted to short and fat. Identifying the modern slugs as belonging to one of two schools, the sharper scalpel, which makes use of the premium handgun and muzzleloader bullets, or the bigger hammer, which celebrates the shotgun's ability to put-.73-inch holes in things, is important.
