Strategy for the first weather leg

Use of currents and wind to maintain top speed is important in sailing the first leg of a race successfully. Knowing whether wind patterns are influenced by geographical or oscillating shifts is crucial. Selecting a strategy for approaching the mark is also discussed.

A racing sailboat should make a quick turn at the windward mark and leave the turn with the boat sailing squarely on its bottom. Maximizing sail area, heeling to windward and getting the boat on plane are important strategies in the reach leg.
