Fish hatcheries have enormous environmental and economic affects that are just beginning to be examined and investigated. Fish released from hatcheries can carry diseases that can affect the wild stock, and water used by the hatcheries can affect other wildlife.

Sued to death: the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is too busy fighting lawsuits to protect endangered species

Article Abstract:

The Fish and Wildlife Service is having difficulties implementing the Endangered Species Act because of lawsuits filed to invoke implementation of the act. The costs and manpower time associated with fighting the lawsuits takes up much of the agency's budget, which is $6.1 million in FY 2001. The agency has been sued for not including certain species on its Endangered Species list.

Paddlefish poached for caviar

International endangered species pacts have limited the supply of Russian caviar, so the US industry has turned to similar roe from paddlefish and lake sturgeon. This endangers US populations of these fish.
