Despite the 34 official rules of golf, it is also important to know the Local Rules or conditions of the specific competition. Some Local Rules include regulations about an embedded ball, preferred lies, a leaf rule, stones in bunkers, relief from sprinkler heads, ball drops, temporary obstructions and one-ball rule.

Least popular rules

According to a GOLFonline.com poll, the least popular golf rule is the stroke-and-distance for an out-of-bounds ball. Other less popular rules include spike marks, the scorecard rule, the advice rule and stones in bunkers rules.
