Swimming on porpoise

Article Abstract:

Stanford University alumnus Jenny Thompson won a world championship for the 100-meter butterfly by using the 'body dolphin' technique. The technique is a standard part of training for the university's swimmers, who are handled by Bill Boomer and Richard Quick. Swimmers eliminate exhaustion associated with the butterfly kick by imitating the dolphin action. The move establishes a smooth, harmonic rhythm that starts at armpit hinge and goes through a swimmer's body line.

Drill deeper

Article Abstract:

Swimming can be defined as 70% stroke efficiency and 30% fitness. This balance highlights the importance of perfectly consistent stroke performance over greater mileage in maximizing potential for success. Stroke drills are designed to help muscles master skills more easily, since a stroke is broken down into a series of small steps. These drills also help to gradually eliminate bad swimming habits.
