'Tails from the bedroom: forget the rut; a hunter's most dependable opportunity awakes when bucks slip off to sleep

Article Abstract:

The bedding areas of the white tail deer are not easy to spot and many hunters miss this opportunity to kill the animal while it is laying down. Areas chosen by bucks offer them the best escape routes. Ways to find a bedding area include backtracking from a feeding area while facing the wind.

The key stages of the rutting behavior of the whitetail deer are described for hunters. The timing of the rut is dependent on many factors, including environmental conditions such as the weather and moon activity, but usually occurs during November in North America.
