The angling tradition

Article Abstract:

Confucius set the ethical standards for angling 2,500 years ago, which included fishing standing up, with only one line and hook. Charter and tournament fishing have eroded the standards in the last century. Confucius taught that ethics can only be enforced by peer pressure, not by law.

The Humane Society runs through it; anti-anglers think of catch-and-release as a way to torture fish

Article Abstract:

'A River Runs Through It' made fishing more popular, but it also raised concerns about cruelty to fish. Groups such as the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) believe that catch-and-release fly-fishing tortures fish. Fish were also hurt during the filming of the movie.

Saving fish ... and fishing

Article Abstract:

One way that fishers can deal with the protests of groups such as the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is to practice catch-and-release fishing. Fishers should use single barbless hooks and should try not to keep fish out of water too long.
