Article Abstract:

Backpackers should start looking for a good campsite well before dark and should quit hiking when a good site appears. Tips on site selection and low-impact camping are given including looking for level, durable ground, keeping 200 ft from the trail and placing tents to capture the morning sun.

Nine hiking boots that cost less than $125 and weigh less than 3 lbs were tested by five professional Appalachian Trail guides. The $99 Salomon Adventure 5 hiking boot was the top-rated model. The $115 Merrell Uinta and the $80 Asolo Superscout also earned high ratings.

People who hike in areas without well-used trails should learn bushwhacking skills. These skills are also useful if hikers accidentally wander off a trail. Bushwhackers should learn to read a topographic map, use a compass, and use common sense.
