The pointing retriever

Some bird hunters are making use of pointing retrievers. The dogs have to be specially trained, since the nature of a retriever is to fetch the bird after it is shot. Most retrievers will sight point and keep advancing on the bird, but some can be taught to point from a distance.

Ken Osborn specializes in training flat coat retrievers in the San Joaquin waterfowl area of California. Flat coat retrievers are descended from Newfoundlands and Labradors and are excellent, intelligent hunters, both of waterfowl and upland game.
