The relationship between athletic participation and perceptions of body size and weight control in adolescent girls: The role of sport type

Article Abstract:

The relationship between athletic participation and perceptions of body size and weight control strategies among adolescent girls is examined. The findings suggest that participation in stereotypical feminist sports might exacerbate body image and dieting problems associated with dominant gender roles, but participation in stereotypically masculine sports does not.

Meaning of sport to adults with physical disabilities: a disability sport camp experience

Article Abstract:

This article uses constructs from the work of French philosopher Michel Foucault to examine the experiences of physically disabled adults during a stay at a disability sport camp. An analysis of interviews with participants revealed that resisting social stigma and testing physical and mental skills resulted in feelings of empowerment.

The article theorizes a link between women's participation in organized sports and their ability to succeed in science education. Topics addressed include the women's age when participating in sports and the different effects sports may have on women of color.
