The second running boom

The popularity of running is at its peak in 1997 after a slump of several years after the late 1970s. Sales of running shoes are up, as is the circulation of Runner's World magazine. The trend is likely to continue as more people run for health reasons.

The visionary

Lebow, who grew up in Romania, was a champion for the sport of running. He was the creator of the New York City Marathon and other events. He died on Oct 9, 1994, of brain cancer. His career and life are profiled by a friend.
