There are 3,854 different kinds of knots, but campers only really need to know five of them to get them through almost any outdoor experience. How to tie surgeon's knots, double fisherman's knots, the round turn and two half hitches, the tarbuck knot and the figure-eight knot is described.

Backpackers and hikers should study topo maps and try to avoid swampy or boggy areas. However, if crossing a swamp is unavoidable, it is best to stick to the sides and grap onto tree roots. Using a staff or pole is also helpful. Tips on boots and rain gear are also given.
