Towing techniques that work

Steps in safely towing a disabled vessel include rigging bridles on both boats, adjusting the length of the towline and finding a good towing speed. Tips for towing alongside, towing under sail and towing a grounded boat are included.

Hands-on sailor

A smaller boat can tow a grounded bigger boat by applying a strong surge on the towlines. The smaller boat has to come ahead after a belly has been created in the line. However, sailors should plan their rescue maneuvers in advance.

Close-quarters anchoring

Article Abstract:

Sailors can use different techniques to anchor in close quarters. Two anchors off the bow provide a good way to reduce swinging. The Bahamian moor and the Mediterranean moor are also described.
