A sailor and his friend Stuart Alexander celebrated their 60th birthday by sailing to southwest Florida, famous for soft winter weather, early-bird restaurant specials and vigorous shuffleboard tournaments. Southwest Florida offers a wide range of cruising grounds, from Everglade wilderness to condo-bound barrier-island sounds and of these, the Charlotte Harbor/Pine Island Sound area is popular with sailors because of its combination of sheltered sound sailing and ready access to the Gulf of Mexico.
