Tout was introduced to the San Juan River poisoning native fish species like Colorado pikeminnow and razorback sucker, by the New Mexico Game and Fish Department. The government scientists in 1992 began the San Juan Recovery Plan to help endangered species by restoring flows that mimic the natural hydrograph.
