Weight and diet concerns in Finnish female and male athletes

Article Abstract:

A study of over 500 male and female athletes surveyed factors related to eating disorders. The risk for eating disorders is associated with the kind of sporting event. Concern for thinness was associated with aesthetic and weight-class events for females and aesthetic and ballgame events for males. Untrained controls did not differ with female athletic groups when tested for eating disorders. Female endurance athletes had less weight and diet concerns than untrained controls. Male athletes were more satisfied with body weight than females. Menstrual dysfunction was also studied.

How anorexic-like are the symptom and personality profiles of aesthetic athletes?

Article Abstract:

A study tested the hypothesis that aesthetic athletes (AA) have anorexic-like attitudes and behaviors, share personality characteristics such as perfectionism and obsessiveness, and are at high risk of eating disorders. Results lend credibility to the existence of the diagnostic entity of anorexia athletica, proposed to be a subclinical, environmentally-influenced eating disorder with a favorable prognosis.

Dietary fats and immune status in athletes: clinical implications

Article Abstract:

The low-fat diet that many athletes follow may be suppressing their immune system. Studies have shown that a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet increases inflammatory proteins, decreases anti-inflammatory proteins, decreases antioxidant levels and alters blood lipoprotein ratios.
