Artificial reef to benefit surfing, protect shoreline

Article Abstract:

A joint venture between the EPA, the Army Corps of Engineers and several local agencies will create the first artificial reef in the US, off the coast of El Segundo, CA. The artificial reef will be used in restoring surf and prevent beach erosion in the area. Sand-filled geotubes or bags built in V shape away from the shoreline will be used in constructing the reef. The structure slices the water to create two breakers. The speed of the wave is determined by the internal angle of the V, and the wider the angle, the faster the wave becomes.

Western Australia

Article Abstract:

The waters of Western Australia are home to the largest fish in the sea, the whale sharks. Whale sharks have been misunderstood for a long time as a huge, man-eating shark. Some marine biologists believe that whale sharks can grow bigger than 40 ft long and can weigh up to 10 tons. Its broad head is its most prominent feature that makes it different from other sharks. Whale sharks appear on Ningaloo Reef every year.
