Article Abstract:

There are two basic windlass types: the vertical and the horizontal. In vertical units, the motor mounts are below deck, requiring little planning of chock and bitt locations. In horizontal units, the motor mounts are above deck, entailing careful planning of mooring and anchoring units.

Yacht owners have several options on how to connect their boats' decks to the dock. They can either install a boarding ladder, a boarding stair, accommodation stairs or transom gangplanks. Boarding ladders have been found to be the least expensive and the simplest to install.
