DirecTV will not confirm reports that its DTV receivers will be able to downgrade HDTV signals at the request of content owners fearful of unauthorized copying. Copy Generation Management System (CGMS) is an agreement under which special codes block HDTV 1080i or 720p signals from component video output and can be set to permit or prohibit single or multiple copies. The movie industry has been pressing for limits on HDTV quality on LCD monitors that take direct video signals from PCs, and consumer-electronics executives say the DirecTV situation is a harbinger of the future in which the rules will be different.

DirecTV and TiVo plan to jointly introduce a video-on-demand (VoD) service. The service will use the "idle capacity" on DirecTV's satellite fleet to feed the Philips- branded DirecTV/TiVo receiver, which comes with 2 tuners and two hard drives. VoD can be used to record 2 programs while watching a third off hard drive. In another development, Echostar Communications is partnering with Starband plans to introduce 2-way satellite- based service.
