A question of ownership

Article Abstract:

The final clarification of the RMS Lusitania's ownership could help clarify a number of political, commercial and military issues associated with the ship. RMS Lusitania was a Class 100A vessel built by Sir Raylton Dixon and Co. It was powered by a 17,000hp steam engine and had a speed of 24 knots. It was launched on Feb 12, 1906 and was sunk by a German U-Boat on May 7, 1915. Among other speculations, it is thought that the ship carried munitions and that the British government had hoped that the Germans would attack the vessel to draw the US into World War I.

Switching from A to B at sea

Article Abstract:

The International Maritime Satellite Organization's (Inmarsat) new Inmarsat-B ship earth stations (SES) digital data system is expected to be fully operational by 3rd qtr of 1996. Inmarsat-B replaces the older Inmarsat-A system in place since the mid-1980s. The new system makes more efficient uses of power and bandwidth, allowing manufacturers to design smaller, lighter and more energy efficient SESs. However, the transition to the new system has been slower than expected.

Humidity reduces NOx

Article Abstract:

The high levels of NOx emissions has been the worst environmental problem in the shipping industry and has led to efforts in developing methods of lessening NOx emissions. Munters' Lars-Ola Olsson and Jan Wettergurd proposed a method that reduces NOx emissions using water vapour. This method has been considered as the most effective technique and has been employed in Humid Air Motor units wherein the combustion air's thermodynamic properties are changed.
