Anger over subsidies

Article Abstract:

The Danish Shipbuilders Assn. (DSA) has filed a complaint with the European Court questioning the legality of the European Commission's decision to grant a $330 million subsidy to Germany's MTW. The DSA contends that the subsidy was made outside the frame of European Union directives, that it is beyond the maximum allowed by law and that MTW is ineligible to receive such a subsidy. Analysts believe that a decision in favor of the DSA will have important implications for the German shipyard.

Article Abstract:

P&O Cruises Ltd's announcement of letters of intent for five new ships carries major implications for the future of the European shipbuilding industry. This is because two of the orders have been awarded to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, which has given the Japanese shipyard a golden opportunity to prove itself as a builder of high value cruise ships. P&O cited the lack of price flexibility and berth availability with the European shipyards.
