Container shipping in the melting pot

Article Abstract:

Container shipping is experiencing a wave of consolidation, as carriers are forming groupings through mergers and acquisitions. Among the most prominent of the consolidations in the sector is the merger of the container operations of P&O and Nedlloyd, which will be called P&O Nedlloyd Container Line. The new company will have a combined turnover of almost $4 billion and will be equally owned by UK and Dutch investors. Carriers are also building larger, fuel-efficient vessels to reduce slot costs to further achieve economies of scale.
