Cool Carriers, the world's container ship fleet, has exceeded the refrigerating capability of the specialist reefer fleet, that is 50.3% of the combined capacity of the container fleet and the reefer fleet. Mats Jansson, president of Cool Carriers, said that there is a strong competition between the two types of ships. Jansson also shared that instead of being dependent on short-term contracts, the company has focused on long-term business relations and trade systems.

Geared ships have the unique capability of unloading their own cargo, thus making them especially useful in bringing goods to developing nations and ports with inadequate or nonexistent cargo handling facilities. Although the building costs of geared vessels are higher, operating costs are similar to that of their gearless counterparts.
