Demand drop slows Singapore impetus

Article Abstract:

Singapore's shipyards have experienced a downturn in gross earnings and profits in 1994. Among the factors contributing to this situation are the intense competition among ship repair firms and the lack of VLCC stemmings in many big shipyards. The entry of government has also given some shipyards cause to complain especially if they are not the beneficiaries of subsidies. At any rate, the industry as a whole is optimistic about 1996 and many firms are ready with their investment plans for 1996.

Owners favour single-source supply

Article Abstract:

Japanese shipbuilders argue that foreign ship equipment manufacturers find it difficult to enter the Japanese market because of the reluctance of many shipowners to purchase foreign-made equipment. Shipowners are averse to buying imported equipment because the cost-savings involved purchasing such equipment are negligible. Moreover, they cite concerns over accurate product specifications and uncertainties regarding supply and the availability of after-sales services.
