Dutch hold their share against European rivals

The Netherlands plays a leading part in Europe's shipbuilding industry, despite receiving 4-5% less in building subsidies than its European counterparts. Conoship International comprises 10 shipbuilders with a total order book at end-1999 of 38 vessels.

Old problems hinder restructure

Article Abstract:

Virtually all Russian shipyards have been striving to restructure themselves to cope with the loss of government subsidies and the shift to a free market system. Some progress has been achieved in this regard but observers note how leftover practices from the old centralized system are hindering such efforts. Moreover, many Russian shipyards are finding it difficult to shift production from military to commercial vessels.

Busy building ships

Article Abstract:

Polish shipyards continue to attract foreign orders despite rumors of debt restructuring and limited funds. Among the yards that are doing well in the international markets are Stocznia Polnocna, Stocznia Gdanska, Stocznia Gdynia and Szczecin Shipyard. All yards are considering new designs and adopting the latest computer technology. However, finance remains a major obstacle to the shipyards' further progress.
