East coast up - Gulf Coast tougher

Article Abstract:

Shipbuilders and repair service companies operating along the Gulf of Mexico have been struggling, as offshore oil operations continue to hinder growth. Reports revealed that increased offshore work in the area has caused exploration and production expenditures to increase at exponential rates. Problems are further aggravated by the failure of freight operators to acquire huge contracts in East Coast dock yards.

Breaking even - just!

Article Abstract:

German ship repair yard operators continue to feel the impact of increased competition from the Baltic Sea region and other European countries. These operators, which include Barthels and Luder, are being forced to implement drastic cost-saving measures that will enable them to maintain their competitiveness. However, other yards have no other option but to relocate or close completely.

Reefer market on the upswing

Article Abstract:

Refrigerated, or reefer, shipping is enjoying a favorable market and observers believe the trend will continue until 1997 and onwards. This condition is due largely to the small number of new reefers coming into the market combined with predictions of a sustained rise in the movement of perishable goods. The market, however, has not yet equalled the peak levels recorded in 1991.
