Electrifying options

Article Abstract:

Ship owners can choose from a variety of diesel-electric propulsion, which can either be high- or low-speed. Although medium-speed engines most often characterize diesel electric installations, gas turbines are slowly becoming popular because of their very low emissions as well as efficiency when applied in integrated heat and power systems. With regards to speed control, majority of vessels with diesel-electric propulsion do not require a CP propeller.

Healthy markets offshore

Article Abstract:

Marine engine manufacturers are coming out with new dual-fuel designs, in large part due to the increased availability of gaseous fuels and the growing demand for low- and medium-speed gas-diesel powerplants. For example, Norwegian gas-fuel pioneer Wartsila Diesel is offering its GD technology in the form of brand-new units or as a retrofit package. Similar offerings are available from Japanese and German manufacturers.

Big bore battle

Article Abstract:

The market appeal of very large bore engines for container ships remains uncertain, with shippers questioning the need for larger container ships. Although both Sulzer and MAN B&W developed larger bore engines in 1995 to complement their ranges, they have yet to receive orders for the engines. Shippers are calling for more tests on the performance of larger bore engines.
