Extinguisher alert!

Article Abstract:

Fire extinguisher accidents are rare but these could be fatal when they happen. The lack of maintenance is the usual cause of these accidents and ship owners are advised to do weekly checks on the extinguishers which include ensuring that the seals are intact and that the hoses do not have signs of cracking. Other fire extinguisher maintenance tips are given.

Maintaining a monopoly of ENC data

Article Abstract:

Hydrographic offices maintain a monopoly of electronic navigational chart data because these agencies have better access to high quality hydrographic data. These offices sometimes find it hard to translate older data to WGS 84 (World Geodetic System) data but are virtually immune against liability charges arising from faulty data.
