IT revolutionises hull maintenance

Article Abstract:

Computer technology has revolutionized the maintenance of ship hulls by enabling shiprepair yards to ascertain the condition of a hull. Short- and long-term benefits can be derived from the use of ship maintenance software packages. The short-term benefit is that owners are given a better understanding of a hull's present condition while the long-term benefit is the software's crucial role in risk-based structural classification and maintenance. The programs can create a computer model of the ship with its characteristics such as steel grade and rule thickness.
