Longer life low-speed

Article Abstract:

Low-speed, two-stroke engines have continued their dominance in the area of shipbuilding with low-speed engines propelling more than 70% of ships built in 1998. However, ship owners have been complaining about a decline in the reliability of these engines and designers have responded by developing several modifications which have either already been incorporated into the engine design or are being tested. For example, combustion chambers for the 80-, 90- and 98-cm-bore MAN B&W engines have been modified to address complaints about the inconel heat protection coating on their piston crowns.

Mixed fortunes for medium speed

Article Abstract:

Engine efficiency may not be solely for medium-speed diesel engines with the emergence of dual-fuel gas engines. Problems arising from diesel engine efficiency like exhaust gas emissions point to a better performance of dual-fuel gas engines. Developed by Wolfram Lausch and Horst Kohler of MAN B&W, dual-fuel gas engines operate between HFO or MDO through direct cylinder high-pressure gas injection or intake air low-pressure gas feeding.

More power from Mitsui

Article Abstract:

Mitsui has developed an ADD30V engine which has a greater output of 40% than engines with similar bore. The engine operates on MDO with a fuel consumption of 184 g/k Wh. A heat resisting valve with an extended aerodynamic space is situated at the center of the design. Gleason provided the Curvic couplings used in individual camshafts in each cylinder. The model also features coated piston rings and liners.
