Emissions heat MEPC debate

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is actively encouraging the shipping industry to comply with emissions target levels, although the organisation may find some countries less than willing to introduce legislation. MEPC studies pollution solutions

Article Abstract:

The Marine Environment Protection Committee has been tasked by the International Maritime Organization to conduct a study on airborne maritime emissions. The study will cover such emissions as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, hydrocarbon and particulate matter emissions. The study is significant since worldwide merchant shipping is believed to be responsible for producing 420 million to 450 million tons of carbon dioxide in 1998 alone, an amount equivalent to 2% to 3% of total world production.
