Motor vehicle crashes on bridges and countermeasure opportunities

Article Abstract:

This article examines patterns and contributing factors of motor vehicle accidents on four New York bridges. Police crash reports indicate that the four most common types of accidents were rear-end collisions, sideswiping, debris-related problems, and fixed-object crashes and that common contributing factors included unsafe driving, vehicle defects, and environmental hazards.

Types and characteristics of ramp-related motor vehicle crashes on urban interstate roadways in Northern Virginia

Article Abstract:

Freeway entrance and exit ramp interchange are the sites of more crashes per mile driven as compared to any other segments of interstate highways. The most frequent crashes on ramps occurred when vehicles were exiting interstates at night, during bad weather or on curved portions of ramps.

Analysis of motor-vehicle crashes at stop signs in four U.S. cities

Article Abstract:

The study conducted to examine the police reports of crashes at stop sign-controlled intersection in four U.S. cities is presented. It argues that stop sign violations accounted for about 70% of all crashes.
