Move towards conversion and shipbuilding

Article Abstract:

Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) has reduced its repair capacity at Ulsan, South Korea and geared it toward more newbuilding and conversion work as part of the firm's strategic move. HMD has also opened its Hyundai-Vinashin yard in Vietnam that would specialize in repair work. The opening of a HMD facility in Vietnam will enable the firm to compete head-on with other shiprepair yards in Asia because of lower labor costs in Vietnam. At the same time, HMD is counting on its skilled workforce in Ulsan to help the firm survive tough times due to its prompt delivery schedules at reasonable costs.
