Owners look to fleet expansion

Article Abstract:

The Turkish government has announced its intention to set up a secondary ship register as part of its program to reverse the decline in the number of Turkish-flagged ships. The government is also expected to proceed with the privatization of the Turkish Maritime Corp (TDI), the body that oversees waterborne public transportation in Turkey and manages some of the country's ports. The privatization program in the shipping sector was put on hold in 1997 after government changes forced its suspension. To date, no ports have been privatized although TDI remains on the list of assets to be sold.

Northern Europe agrees its regional standard

Article Abstract:

Northern European ferry operators have agreed to implement new safety standards by Oct. 2002 to enhance the survivability of roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) boats. Under the new standards, RoRo will be required to comply with the Solas 90 guidelines and additional requirement that such ships be able to remain buoyant even if its lower car deck is filled with 50 cm. of water. In addition, RoRo ships will be required to install a third barrier door in its bow and stern roll-off areas. Ships will also be required to stay afloat even if one compartment becomes flooded.

Lighting the way to safety

Article Abstract:

The International Maritime Organization has issued Resolution A752 (18), which requires passenger ships to install low-location emergency lighting throughout their escape routes. These lighting indicators are intended to help passengers identify exits in the event of accidents and even when they are forced down to the floor by smoke. Under the resolution, all new ships must feature such systems, while older ships must install them by Oct. 1, 1997. They may use either electrically-powered systems or photoluminescent material.
