The end of the Gonzalez era?

Article Abstract:

A series of scandals has dragged down the government of Felipe Gonzalez and the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) and assured the end of its 13-year rule. One prominent scandal involved the Director-General of the Civil Guard, who had taken money from the Civil Guard reserved funds to buy numerous properties for himself in Spain and elsewhere. Other scandals followed, involving high government officials, government bankers, and the secret police. The conservative Popular Party gained 34.5% of the vote in the May 1995 elections, compared to 31% for the PSOE, representing a major shift.
