Ecdis tested in frozen north

Article Abstract:

Ice-breaking vessel Fennica has been the testbed for the EU-funded, two-year Echo (European Chart Hub Operations) project which began in Apr 1996 and ended in Mar 1998. Echo was designed to demonstrate a new commercially-based based service for the storage and distribution of electronic navigation charts to ships for use in their electronic chart displays (ecdis). The conclusion of Project Echo underscored the potential advantages for ecdis.

Still waiting after all these years

Article Abstract:

The International Maritime Organization approved performance standards for electronic navigational charts in Nov. 1995. However, the final version required for type approval will not be available before late 1997 or early 1998. Fortunately, existing equipment such as Norcontrol's SeaMap, Tolimec's EC-6000 and Consilium Marine's Selesmar INS970 ECDIS are flexible enough to allow for changes to meet future changes in standards.
