Salty air stymies TWIC

Article Abstract:

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration is set to implement its Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program for an estimated 750,000 marine workers who will apply for the cards that will be used in port access, but the process is being delayed with issues regarding the development of the readers and some procedural and administrative matters. The applicants willl have to undergo strict background check and must pass muster before receiving the biometric card, although possession of it will not guarantee access to all ports as many ports still plan to continue their own security program.

Port state picks up flag

Article Abstract:

Port authorities are authorized to board and examine foreign flagged vessels to ensure that they meet safety and pollution control regulations. Currently, there are three organizations which operate port state control. However, this number is expected to rise as the number of offenders continues to increase. The International Maritime Organization provides a database to which port states report their inspections and the results.
