Specialist ship for specialised cargoes

Article Abstract:

The Shanghai Edward Shipbuilding Co. built Coral Millepora, a container ship that carries Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), vinyl chloride monomer or ammonia for worldwide delivery. The ship's cargo is carried in two independent tanks, that are either bilobe or cylindrical and its main propulsion is provided by Wartsila 8R32D (3,968) MCR at 720 revs/min. Bridge and navigation equipments include Raytheon Anschutz radars with gyro compass, autopilot and rudder angle indicator.

Standing strong together

Norway is determined to maintain its image as one of the world's most active maritime nation despite the negative impact of the current tax regime on the country's shipping industry. Norway's parliament has already signified its intention to promote interdependence and competence in the industry by framing new regulations. The industry also plans to expand its market in the European Union.

One man too few?

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the deployment of manpower and technology, following the collision between 2 ships in the Dover Straits in 1999, are discussed. The implications for the workload of ships' officers and the use of navigation equipment are examined.
