Spain's strategic location in the middle of western maritime routes enabled it to make unprecedented strides in maritime voyage and discovery. It also established a ship building and repair tradition that has endured since the 15th century. Future prospects for Spain's shipbuilding/repair industry are very bright because of the variety and flexibility of Spanish docking options, and the combined resources of excellent weather, traditional steel, machinery and pipe shops, lifting equipment, workers' advanced skill levels.

Innovative design for British trio

Article Abstract:

BP Shipping is currently improving specifications to its British Harrier, the company's first H-class tankers, and the company's design team is considering the idea of a bunker tank arrangement. The design is aimed at improving the protection of the tanker's fuel oil tanks to avoid rupturing when accidents occur. An oil-tight bulkhead was built into the fuel oil bunker tank to avoid constraints while being environmentally-friendly.

Asian growth affects world market

Article Abstract:

Shipbuilding companies in southeast Asian nations such as Sinagpore and South Korea are investing in new expansion projects despite the shortage in labor supply. Among the countries which are being targeted by these firms for their expansion projects are the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. This trend is expected to affect the global shipbuilding industry and lead to worldwide competition among shipyards.
