Although the world is busy improving sea vessel security against terrorism, incidents of piracy are on the rise. A report released by the ICC International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Reporting Committee stated that in 2002, there were 370 piracy attacks, up from 335 in 2001.

The marine industry in Singapore rose 16% in 2002, reaching a record $2.5 billion. Additionally, this rise in production has added to employment figures, which rose to 33,000 in that year. These figures are from the Economic Development Board.
