Value Analysis 1984; A Status Report

Article Abstract:

Value Analysis (VA) is being utilized in manufacturing companies. VA emphasizes creativity and teamwork. VA is being used for cost reduction, quality control and management effectiveness. Purchasing has a major interest in value analysis. A survey revealed that though VA helps achieve cost savings, quality improvements are a major result of VA, which also can spur creative teamwork. Purchasing managers also cite the contribution of VA to marketing objectives. VA is considered more important than ever by surveyed purchasing managers. Respondents reveal that VA pays its own way.

Value Analysis (VA) has been employed at General Electric Co. for thirty-seven years. At GE, VA focuses on quality and team approach between purchasing and engineering. The GE purchasing department has been reorganized. Cost is still important, but suppliers are told that quality is perceived as added value. VA is referred to as engineered producability at GE.
