Avoid a Valentine's Day massacre

Article Abstract:

The European tourist industry has seen a growing interest in Valentine Day's breaks, with lovers in the UK being among the most enthusiastic proponents of the traditional romance of February 14th. Quality hotel group Small Luxury Hotels is offering a Valentine package and expects bookings over the Valentine weekend to increase by 15%. Other hotel groups, including Leading Hotels of the World, are also marketing short-breaks for a romantic weekend.

Spoilt for choice in Germany

Article Abstract:

A considerable number of hotel operators are planning to open one- and two-star hotels in Germany in 1997. Choice Hotels, for example, already has 19 Quality Hotels and 20 Comfort Hotels, and plans to open at least a further 11 hotels under the Comfort name in 1997. Etap Hotels, subsidiary of Accor, is set to open six-eight hotels in 1997, having opened eight in 1996. It currently has 40 properties with a total of 2,500 rooms.

Budget growth stalls in France

Article Abstract:

The number of rooms in French hotels rose to 210,585 in 1996, from 204,644 in 1995. Most of the increase was in the three- and four-star sector, while the budget sector did not expand as much as originally forecast. The number of one-star rooms rose to 17,249, from 16,832, while the number of two-star rooms rose by only 516 to 73,321. The largest hotel operator is Accor, with 89,574 rooms.
