Antarctica

Article Abstract:

The tourist industry of Antarctica is limited due to the inaccessibility of the region and small range of travellers the area would appeal to. Independent travel is almost non-existent due to the large distances needed to travel to reach the area. The sensitivity of the region must remain a priority when developing the tourist industry. The industry was valued at about $42,762,000 in 1998, with 12,604 travellers visiting the region.

In 1998, Israel received 2.2 million foreign visitors, representing a 4% drop in 1997 and 13% down on 1995. The drop in tourism is attributed to the country's volatile relations with Iraq. Total international receipts reached $3.1 billion, and travel and tourism made up 25% of exported services. Details of arrivals are included, along with visitor profiles, details of transport and accommodation and prospects for the future.
